When the people tell a singer that his voice brings colors into their lives, he knows that he has to look for these colors somewhere. The roll of a singer may not satisfy his inner hunger completely. As if there would be a desire to express something different, to balance or compensate something. And exactly at this moment, I sit down at a canvas and I feel relief, which balances the unrelenting strictness of show business. And the idea follows me so long, until I sit down and paint it – for example the view of the audience. So I captured the sort of different faces and expressions reacting to the concert on a painting which I called “Spot on the audience”.

The idyll of the painter´s atelier with view of the Prague castle I set on my favorite spot – the riverside Na Františku. I like the the view of Hradčany castle from here much more than the famous “hundred crown” view, where you can see the dam and the Charles bridge in the front. But it´s a spot where there is no house standing where a painter could work. So I had to create a sort of brick box according to me in my fantasy.

Roll over Beethoven

In these houses, the genius composer Ludwig van Beethoven has lived. One of the houses is located in Paris, the second one is located in Bonn, where Beethoven was born and the third one, the corner house on the right side, is located in Vienna. I took them all and placed on one square, put a monument of the composer in the centre and painted a dancing crowd of fans around him. This idea has been following me since the time when I for the first time in 1965 heard Chuck Berry´s song Roll over Beethoven.

There are places in the world, where one directly longs to be back in the past, at least for a while. A unrealizable wish. So at least in my fantasy I captured Vienna´s life one hundred years ago on the canvas, in the time of the greatest fame and glance, Vienna, it´s magic and comfort, I simply like it. And despite some say “Vienna stays Vienna” or “Wien bleibt Wien”, I imagine that it would be a different story in the period of Belle Époque under the Austrian monarchy.
